The advantages of using automatic vision for industrial inspection are described and problems encountered with binary vision techniques are addressed. Grey scale techniques are examined and the iconic approach, in which the object to be inspected is matched to a perfect archetypal image, is examined. Two tests which can be performed on the windows (small critical areas in which the comparison takes place) are evaluated: (1) the correlation coefficient between pixels in the prototype and test windows, and (2) a chi-squared comparison of the grey scale frequency distribution in the two windows. These two statistics, and nine others, are appraised in terms of efficiency, robustness, computational speed, and storage requirements. Two tests are proposed which are said to surpass the two noted above in terms of robustness, compactness, and speed of calculation.
